Interview with Shemar Moore, Ambassador for the National MS Society

July 16, 2008 04:52 PM

Trevor says (9:30 AM):
How did you get involved with the MS movement?
Shemar says (9:31 AM):
My mom was diagnosed with MS about nine years ago. She’s always been very strong. At first it was pretty scary to think about how living with such an unpredictable disease would impact our family, but she’s doing great.
Trevor says (9:31 AM):
It says here you started showing support by riding a bike?
Shemar says (9:32 AM):
I got involved with the Bike MS event. It’s a bike ride that raises funds and awareness for MS.
Trevor says (9:32 AM):
Is it big?
Shemar says (9:33 AM):
I think it’s the biggest in America. They do 100 different rides to benefit the National MS Society around the country.
Trevor says (9:33 AM):
Gotcha. So you joined a team?
Shemar says (9:33 AM):
There were a few crew members on Criminal Minds who are professional cyclists, John Hatchett and Greg St. John. They suggested getting a team together. We rode 100 miles in one day.
Trevor says (9:34 AM):
Did any other cast members ride with you?
Shemar says (9:34 AM):
Thomas Gibson joined me on the ride in 2006. And for the last two years, many of my terrific castmates have been my cheerleaders along the route, including Joe Mantegna, Mandy Patinkin, Paget Brewster, Matthew Gray Gubler, and Kirsten Vangsness.
Trevor says (9:35 AM):
How did it go?
Shemar says (9:36 AM):
Absolutely. It’s also wonderful seeing how happy our effort makes my mom, and knowing that the same scene gets repeated all over the country. What’s also great is the support I’ve gotten from all of my co-stars for the ride—that means a lot.
Trevor says (9:36 AM):
Do you still ride?
Shemar says (9:37 AM):
Yes, I’ve done the past two years.
Trevor says (9:37 AM):
What would you say to someone with a family member diagnosed with MS?
Shemar says (9:37 AM):
Think about all the great things that person did for you and think about all the great things they still can do with the right support. If riding 100 miles helps that person and everyone else with MS, you’d do it—right?

Today is National MS Society day

July 16, 2008 03:52 PM

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is a collective of passionate individuals who want to do something about MS now-to move together toward a world free of multiple sclerosis. Today Shemar Moore from the CBS hit series Criminal Minds (Special Agent Derek Morgan), and an ambassador for the National MS Society, will be joining Trevor for an IM interview. Shemar's mother lives with MS and he's very active in the MS movement. He's raised thousands of dollars by biking hundreds of miles in Bike MS rides, and spreads the word in the media. Trevor will post the transcript while I step out for a quick dinner with Diane.

FAQ 2: Can I join the i'm Initiative if I use a Mac?

July 16, 2008 07:40 AM

Yes and no. The Mac version of Windows Live Messenger works on a different kind of software. The Windows version is built to handle more kinds of customization, and that includes adding the "i'm" code that makes the whole thing run. Also, the Mac version of Messenger isn't ad-supported, and that's where the donations come from. So, to make a long story short: Messenger on Mac can't be part of i'm. But Windows Live Hotmail on the Mac? No problem. It works just fine in Firefox and Safari. Go to im.live.com to sign up.

Random pre-date ramblings

July 16, 2008 03:46 AM

Today's the big day; I'm taking Diane out for dinner. She was cool about the tacos and also my suggestion that we ride bikes. I couldn't stomach the carbon emissions generated by driving, especially with the Talkathon in full swing and all.

Speaking of which, it's all going great. I'm IMing and e-mailing with people I haven't spoken to in years. And aside from a certain grade school teacher, who apparently can't let a little grammatical infraction go once and a while, it's been an amazingly positive thing. Seriously, Mrs. Vosbikian! I am not in your class anymore, and I have earned the right to creative punctuation!

Meanwhile, I'm keeping in touch with people AND raising funds for important social causes. It's a "win-win." (One of the many annoying phrases I picked up in the corporate world, along with "proactive" and "added-value" and my least favorite, "net-net.")  But I can't help but laugh because right now I'm being "proactive" by IMing and I'm  "adding value" because they help my cause. Net-net: It feels good.

Anyway, it's taco time. I need to teach Trevor a few things about running the Talkathon while I'm away.
