Interview with Jeff Towers, Chief Development Officer of the American Red Cross

July 03, 2008 03:06 PM

Parker says (10:25 AM):
Hi Jeff
Jeff says (10:25 AM):
Hi
Parker says (10:25 AM):
What’s the Red Cross mission statement in a nutshell?
Jeff says (10:26 AM):
The Red Cross saves lives by providing relief to disaster victims, and by helping people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
Parker says (10:26 AM):
How do you get all that work done?
Jeff says (10:26 AM):
Volunteers are the heart of the Red Cross. They make up about 95% of our workforce.
Jeff says (10:27 AM):
They do everything. Respond to single-family fires, teach CPR classes, work as blood donor recruiters. Youth volunteers are huge.
Parker says (10:27 AM):
How do you volunteer?
Jeff says (10:27 AM):
Contact your local chapter or go to redcross.volunteermatch.org
Parker says (10:28 AM):
What would you say to someone thinking of volunteering?
Jeff says (10:28 AM):
BRAVO!!!
Jeff says (10:29 AM):
It shows you care for people and want to make the world a better place.
Parker says (10:29 AM):
“Disaster relief” sounds pretty intimidating. How often are you called into service?
Jeff says (10:29 AM):
About two hundred times a day in the USA alone. That’s 70,000 disasters a year.
Parker says (10:30 AM):
I was told there’d be no math.
Parker says (10:30 AM):
What has the i’m Initiative’s support meant to the American Red Cross?
Jeff says (10:31 AM):
Red Cross social media projects like the i’m Initiative help us reach out to new supporters and give existing supporters new ways to be involved.
Jeff says (10:31 AM):
Plus, people who’ve chosen the Red Cross as their cause through the i’m Initiative are making a big difference when they e-mail or IM.
Jeff says (10:31 AM):
I’d like to thank them for their support.

It's the American Red Cross Day

It's the American Red Cross Day. I'm sure you've heard of them. Their symbol is pretty much synonomous with Whew. When you're in trouble, and you see that red cross, you know that the cavalry has arrived. I‘m going to interview Jeff Towers, their Chief Development Officer, in a little while to see what else I can learn about their work. I'll post the transcript later.

If you’re reading this, your BS detector is chirping like a smoke detector with a dicey 9-volt. As you’ve probably guessed, this blog is fictional, but the causes, and the i’m Initiative most certainly are not. The purpose of this blog is to raise awareness of the i’m Initiative and the worthy causes it helps. If we rubbed you the wrong way in the process that wasn’t our intention, so “sorry, our bad.” The alternate was something called an “e-mail blast.” But, believe us that’s not nearly as exciting as it sounds. A herd of well-compensated legal professionals in Redmond, Washington, says we also need to tell you something:
