Is it just me, or are all cats aloof?

July 04, 2008 09:01 AM

In honor of the Humane Society of the United States I thought I'd give a shout-out to my cat Feldspar. He's awesome in his own superior way; he's a rescue cat. I "adopted" him from a shelter about five years ago.  When I got him he was quick to make it clear that I'd done him no favors-it was my good fortune to have him come home to live with me.

From his first steps through my humble abode he let me know through a long series of squints that he was totally underwhelmed. But, as it turns out, the sunny spot on the couch meets with his approval, and so I can no longer sit there. That's where he spends his days, ALL DAY, until the sun goes down-only then will he stoop so low as to find me and sit on my lap.  I'm resigned to the fact that I'm nothing but a big heating pad that runs at a constant 98.7 degrees.

If Feldspar understood English I'd ask him, "Is my lap warming you? Or are you warming my lap?" I think that might just take him down a notch.

OK, so I just had an internet celebrity on the Talkathon. I'm starting to feel that celebrity is awfully cheap these days.

Interview with Wayne Pacelle, President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States

June 30, 2008 03:05 PM

It’s the Humane Society of the United States day!

The Humane Society of the United States is the nation’s largest and most effective animal protection organization—backed by 10 million Americans, or one in every 30. Established in 1954, The HSUS seeks a humane and sustainable world for all animals—a world that will also benefit people. We are America’s mainstream force against cruelty, exploitation and neglect, as well as the most trusted voice extolling the human-animal bond. I’m doing an IM interview with their president and CEO Wayne Pacelle. I’ll post the transcript for you.

Parker says (11:15 AM):
Mr. Pacelle. Thanks for IMing!
Wayne says (11:15 AM):
Happy to.
Parker says (11:15 AM):
What are the goals of The Humane Society of the United States?
Wayne says (11:16 AM):
We work to confront animal cruelty and celebrate the bonds we share with animals.
Parker says (11:16 AM):
Cool. Personal question: How did you get involved?
Wayne says (11:16 AM):
I’ve always felt a sense of kinship and empathy toward animals.
Parker says (11:16 AM):
What would you say is The HSUS’s greatest accomplishment?
Wayne says (11:17 AM):
In the last two years, we’ve passed more than 150 new state laws to protect animals.
Parker says (11:17 AM):
That’s amazing. How?
Wayne says (11:17 AM):
We’ve exposed major abuses like dogfighting, abuse of downer livestock, the Canadian seal hunt…
Parker says (11:18 AM):
What’s the toughest part of your job?
Wayne says (11:18 AM):
Probably the misery and suffering I’ve seen.
Parker says (11:18 AM):
How do you deal?
Wayne says (11:19 AM):
I don’t internalize it—I take my anger and turn it into action and focus some of my emotional energy on our progress.
Parker says (11:19 AM):
What’s the best way for people to help The HSUS?
Wayne says (11:19 AM):
I have a detailed list on my blog. Check it out here.
Wayne says (11:19 AM):
A really simple one: Join the i’m Initiative, and select The HSUS as your cause.
Parker says (11:20 AM):
What I been sayin’.
Wayne says (11:20 AM):
Also, follow the three Rs of eating:
Wayne says (11:20 AM):
Reduce your consumption of meat.

Refine your diet by avoiding animal products derived from factory farming.

Replace meat and other animal-based foods with vegetarian foods.
Parker says (11:21 AM):
Pretty straightforward.
Wayne says (11:21 AM):
Another great way is to adopt a friend from a local animal shelter.
Parker says (11:21 AM):
I like that idea, maybe I’ll do that myself when my Talkathon is over.
Wayne says (11:22 AM):
You should.
Parker says (11:22 AM):
Alright, thanks for IMing!

The Humane Society of the United States

June 30, 2008 09:38 AM

So, I'm here, I'm talking, making videos, IMing and e-mailing and doing everything I can to rally people and raise consciousness. And it occurs to me that it would be hard to do that, if all I could do was bark.

That's one reason I think the Humane Society of the United States is so cool. They're speaking up for creatures who can't.

We can be kind of arrogant, we people, with our fancy language and opposable thumbs. It can make us ignore our similarities with creatures that don't have cool things like electric guitars, or socket wrenches.

When we ignore the similarities, we can overlook all kinds of things. We can convince ourselves that animals can't think, or don't have emotions, or can't feel pain. It makes us feel we can experiment on them, or hunt them, or make them fight while we drink beer and yell "woooooeeeeeee"!

Anyway. The Humane Society of the United States is there for the animals. All the animals. Goldfish and cats and dogs and horses and sheep and moose. To make sure we humans treat them humanely. Which shouldn't be too much to ask of ourselves, right?

If you’re reading this, your BS detector is chirping like a smoke detector with a dicey 9-volt. As you’ve probably guessed, this blog is fictional, but the causes, and the i’m Initiative most certainly are not. The purpose of this blog is to raise awareness of the i’m Initiative and the worthy causes it helps. If we rubbed you the wrong way in the process that wasn’t our intention, so “sorry, our bad.” The alternate was something called an “e-mail blast.” But, believe us that’s not nearly as exciting as it sounds. A herd of well-compensated legal professionals in Redmond, Washington, says we also need to tell you something:
